Coopersville - A man who got out of his car after sliding off Interstate 96 near Fruitridge
Avenue ended up losing his life.
Andrew Corner, 24, of Coopersville was killed when another vehicle went out of control and hit him.
"We feel for that person." Andrew's mother Phyllis Corner says about the driver who killed
her son. "We have no hard feelings. We feel for that person because they are going to live with
this for the rest of their lives."
The car Andrew Corner was driving slid on ice about 6:45 Thursday morning near the Fruitridge exit
eastbound on Interstate 96. His vehicle stopped in the median. Corner and another driver who had
stopped to offer assistance were waiting for help when an S-U-V skidded and slammed into them.
Corner was killed and the good samaritan, Jon Roy of Marne was injured.
"They had done what they could to be off the road," says state police trooper Jennifer
Johnson. "It's not very unusual, actually. When you think about the number of cars that go off
the road and there just happens to be someone standing in the way."
Police say drivers and passengers are very vulnerable when they exit a vehicle along a busy highway.
After reading the report from investigators, the county prosecuting attorney will decide if the driver
who struck and killed Andrew Corner will face any charges.
